Senior School

Senior Prep (P7) and Senior 1

All candidates for entry to Senior Prep (P7) and Senior 1 will sit Maths and English assessments.  Candidates are invited to the school to meet the Rector accompanied by their parents. We hope that children will be able to talk about themselves, their interests and enthusiasms.

Our core assessment period runs through January and February, although applications are accepted throughout the year. Rector interviews take place during December and January followed by Assessment Day. As well as assessments in English and Maths, Assessment Day involves a fun team-building session, mad science experiments and sports activities. Candidates are assessed on the basis of their performance in our Entrance Assessments, interview and a satisfactory report from their current school.

Candidates applying outwith the February assessment period will be invited to spend a Taster Day at the School, joining a class for the day and meeting some of their prospective classmates.  During the visit they will complete Maths and English assessments. Having the opportunity to meet some possible future classmates and teachers can be a real benefit to prospective pupils. It also enables us to get to know your children.

Senior 2 & 3

Applicants to Senior 2 and Senior 3 will meet with the Rector for interview and be invited to have a Taster Day in School, during which they will sit assessments in Maths and English. A copy of their most recent school report will also be a requirement.

Senior 4

Entry at S4 level is usually discouraged given that pupils will be midway in their studies for National 4 and 5 exams. We understand however, that families relocating to Glasgow may have no control over this timing.

Senior 5 & 6

We welcome applications from pupils wishing to join KA in S5 and S6.  Pupils entering S5 are expected to select five Higher subjects, including English. A whole range of options is available in S6, including development of up to three subjects beyond Higher Grade to Advanced Higher, consolidation of subjects already studied in S5 or entirely new subjects.

Applicants are invited to meet the Rector for interview and attend Kelvinside for a Taster Day.  We will ask for results of any recent examinations, including SQA exams. If we require further information about your child’s academic progress, we may contact his or her school. Any place offered in S5 or S6 will not be conditional upon August examination results as we fully understand the need to make definite arrangements prior to that.

If your child is successful in gaining a place at Kelvinside Academy, they will be invited to join the School as soon as exam leave is over in late May or early June. Experience has shown that if they can join the School towards the end of the Summer Term, it helps them have a much more confident start in August.

No entrance assessments or interviews can be undertaken before a completed application form has been received, together with the application fee of £30.
