How to Give

Gifts of every size make a genuine difference to our School and will enhance the lives of pupils in need, both today and in the future. Discover the different methods of giving below.

Methods of Giving

Gifts enhance the educational experience for our pupils and help us create a fantastic learning environment. Each donation helps fund scholarships, enhance facilities, and supports the School’s mission to offer exceptional opportunities to children from all walks of life. At KA, we celebrate philanthropy in many ways, and we are enormously grateful to every donor who contributes to our children’s futures. Please note there is a charge of 3.5% by the system provider for donations made online.
  • Gift Aid

If you are a UK taxpayer, you can use Gift Aid to make your donation go further. It doesn’t cost you more, but could increase the value of your gift. As a charity, we can reclaim an extra 25 pence on every pound you donate. The Minerva Educational Trust will claim Gift Aid from the tax you pay for the current tax year. Please contact the Development Office if you would like a receipt for your donation.

  • Regular Giving

Regular gifts are vital to KA, as they allow the School to grow the number of pupils supported and enhance facilities to create an environment where pupils can achieve their full potential.

You can set up a regular gift online below, or you can instruct your bank to create a standing order. Please contact the Development Office on 0141 357 3376 if you intend to create a standing order, and the correct details to pass to your bank can be disclosed.

Alternatively, this form can be completed and returned to the Development Office.

  • One-Off Gift

One-off monetary gifts can be made at any point, making them incredibly flexible to suit your circumstances. You can make a one-off gift online, or alternatively you can choose one of the following options.

    • Online Banking: make your donation using these details, then email elaine.solman@kelvinside.org to advise the Development Office and confirm if your donation qualifies for Gift Aid.
    • Cheque: make payable to ‘The Minerva Educational Trust’ and post to Kelvinside Academy, accompanied with a Donation/Gift Aid Form available here.
    • Phone: call us on 0141 357 3376 (option 2).
    • Cash: complete and enclose this form with your donation, then send or hand in the cash gift to the School.
    • Items/Artefacts: we accept gifts of items or artefacts. Please email elaine.solman@kelvinside.org if you intend to or would like to discuss making such a donation.
  • Donate Shares or Other Assets

Giving shares to the Foundation can be a very tax-efficient way of supporting the School. By donating shares, you normally do not have to pay any capital gains tax that you would incur if you sold the shares at a higher price than when you first bought or inherited them.

Following the Autumn Budget in 2024, the Capital Gains Tax on disposals of shares, securities, unit trusts, and other investments has been brought into line with that of residential property, being 18% for standard rate taxpayers and 24% for higher rate taxpayers. The transfer of shares to a charity is exempt from such Capital Gains Tax.

Income tax relief is also available on gifts of shares, securities, unit trusts, and various other investments such as property and land if you are a UK resident. The ‘net benefit to charity’ figure is treated as a deduction from income, and tax relief is given in full.

    How to Give Shares

Complete a ‘Stock Transfer Form’ (J30) to transfer the shares out of your name and into the charity’s name.

If you have a broker or advisor handling your investments, they can complete the transfer in discussion with Kelvinside Academy’s Chief Operating Officer. If you do not have a broker, we can email you a J30, or, alternatively, these forms can be downloaded from the internet.

Please note that if the amount of donated shares is relatively small, it may not be worthwhile using the investment brokers to handle the transfer, as any fees might significantly erode the value of the gift. In this case, the transfer can be carried out by completing a J30.

  • Leaving a Legacy

Gifts in wills have always been extremely important to the School, and we are grateful to those who choose to support KA in this tax-efficient way. The KA 1878 Club was launched to recognise academicals and friends of KA who wish to support the School by leaving a gift in their will.
