Junior School

We’ve worked hard to create an environment which allows for different experiences every day, where children can work together with their peers as well as being directed by a teacher. By giving pupils a say in what they learn and how they learn it, they become active participants in the process.

A unique approach

Our approach revolves around our fundamental belief that intelligence isn’t fixed. So, we’ve created an environment where children can work together to improve as young people. From the moment pupils begin their early years education, we want to instil values, and create an opportunity for pupils to follow their passions while developing all the social and cognitive skills they need.

Our teachers spend a significant portion of their time on personal development and all share a similar growth mindset. One of our values is that we invite challenge from pupils. If teachers make sure children have the opportunity for a wide variety of experiences to build upon, there’s much more they can learn, because our brains are built to connect new learning to existing knowledge.

Our philosophy

One Size Doesn’t Fit All
Presenting information and learning isn’t one size fits all and we want to develop young people who are full of curiosity and wonder. This means giving them the time, space and opportunity to follow their own passions.
Expanded Curriculum
Our expanded curriculum goes beyond traditional academia by including activities that nurture creativity, physical development, and social skills. All of our J1-J6 pupils have weekly studio sessions in our Innovation School as well as Forest School sessions.
Modern Classrooms
Our modern classrooms allow for a personalised learning experience where each pupil can receive individual attention. This intimate setting allows for tailored teaching, producing close relationships between students and teachers, and promoting a strong sense of community.

Our Junior school

  • J1 & J2

Aged four or five, children from nursery spread their wings and move up to Junior School, starting their primary school education journey in J1. They will move towards a more structured learning environment, but play based experiences are still at the heart of their learning day.

Children learn when they have a base of knowledge. If teachers make sure children have the opportunity for a wide variety of experiences to build upon, there’s much more they can learn. The more they learn, the more it triggers the reward system in their brains.

  • J3-J6

Children learn when they have a base of knowledge. If teachers make sure children have the opportunity for a wide variety of experiences to build upon, there’s much more they can learn, because our brains are built to connect new learning to existing knowledge.

We’ve worked hard to create an environment which allows for different experiences every single day, where children can work together with their peers rather than be directed by a teacher.  A place where they can question and challenge – not just accept things as they are.

After a major refurbishment, all our classroom now feel like completely flexible collaborative spaces, rather than classrooms. Children learn best when they are active in their learning. The environment is set up in such a way so the children are afforded different opportunities to work and collaborate with different people.

  • Senior Prep (P7)

At Kelvinside Academy, the move from P7 to S1 is made seamless by a transition year known as Senior Prep. The Senior Prep experience is designed to prepare pupils of P7 age both academically and emotionally for senior school.

Teaching & Learning

Our teaching and learning approach focuses on developing a love for learning through a blend of academic rigour and creative exploration. Our teachers emphasise individualised learning, ensuring that each child’s unique needs are met while our general philosophy is designed to develop critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Our job, as educators, is to inspire the children, to bring wonder and intrigue into every lesson.

Beyond the Classroom

Education in its broadest sense is not just about academic achievement, so we offer a wide range of co-curricular activities designed to develop creative, social, cognitive and physical skills.

Wrap Around Care

We understand how difficult it can be for parents to balance work and home commitments, so at Kelvinside Academy we offer early drop off to Breakfast Club as well as a flexible After School Care facility.
