Sports Scholarships

Our Sports Scholarship Programme was introduced last year to celebrate talent and promote high sporting achievement in the Senior School. There are a number of hockey and rugby scholarship places on offer to talented individuals.

This is fantastic opportunity to join Kelvinside Academy and help build on the School's impressive sporting pedigree.

Kelvinside Academy has an impressive history of outstanding rugby players, most notable recent Academicals including current Scotland players Scott Cummings and Ritchie Gray, with Duncan Munn captaining the 2023 U20 Scotland team.  Our 2022-23 senior rugby squad emerged victors of both the Hutcheson's Grammar and High School of Glasgow 7s tournaments.

Our 1st XI hockey teams had back to back wins in the Senior Scottish Schools Challenge Cup, winning and retaining the cup in 2022 and 2023.  Our S3 team lifted the Junior Scottish Schools Challenge Cup in 2023.  Emma Williams our 2022/23 Hockey Captain played for Scotland U18 and won a prestigious US hockey scholarship to University of Richmond.

Scholarship & Fees

Sports Scholars will be enrolled onto a sports programme for the duration of their time at Kelvinside Academy as the school commits to developing the talents of scholars to their fullest.  Sports Scholarships contribute 20-50% of school fees, depending upon the award.  To ensure that the necessary fee assistance is available to parents who require additional support,  you can apply for means-tested assistance  up to the value of 80% of the fees alongside a Sports Scholarship.

These scholarships are open to pupils joining in S1 & S2 in August 2024. There are also scholarships available to pupils joining in S5.

Criteria

Kelvinside Academy rugby and hockey scholarships are available for pupils who demonstrate an excellent attitude, motivation, outstanding talent and potential to contribute strongly to sport at the School.  They will already stand out amongst their peers.

  • Evident natural sporting ability
  • Potential: just as important as current level of performance
  • Motivation to train and perform
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • The desire and drive to excel in sport

Award holders will be expected to make significant contribution and commitment to Kelvinside Academy rugby or hockey programmes. Scholars will be expected to continue their commitment to this development throughout their time at the School and to be role models to others.

Talent ID Assessment Sessions

Applicants will be assessed at a Talent ID session in February or March 2024. The Assessment Session is designed to allow candidates to demonstrate the best of their abilities in a challenging and competitive environment. The session is split into different categories and the KA Sports staff will consider a pupil’s likely development over time and not just raw talent at a young age.

  • Welcome with the Director of Sport, Mr Wilson
  • Interview with the Rector, Mr Wyatt
  • Assessment of fundamental movement skills, abilities, and fitness
  • Assessment of Rugby or Hockey skills and game playing
