Senior Prep (SP)

At Kelvinside Academy, the move from Primary 7 to Senior 1 is made seamless by a transition year known as Senior Prep. The Senior Prep experience is designed to prepare pupils of P7 age both academically and emotionally for Senior School.

They move to their own area within Senior School but still have their own teacher and classrooms, maintaining the colour and liveliness of the Junior School, whilst giving them increased independence.

Pastoral Care

Senior Prep class and form teachers work closely with the Senior School Pastoral Team to ensure the transition process is seamless and the school has a robust system in place for the transfer of academic and pastoral information.

Curriculum

In SP the pupils study Maths, English and Social Subjects with their class teacher. However, they go to subject specialists for Science, ICT, Innovation SchoolModern LanguagesArtMusic, Religious Studies and Physical Education.

The Senior Prep year is a good entry point for pupils joining the school. It is the first of the three-year experience from SP to S2 in which students follow a broad range of subjects as a general introduction to the senior curriculum. Within the classroom, increasing emphasis is placed on developing independent study and time management skills to enable pupils to meet the demands of the Secondary School curriculum and timetable.

Senior Extra-Curricular

They also participate fully in the extra-curricular life of the Senior School and in December have the chance to enjoy their first senior school ceilidh after several weeks of traditional Scottish dance practice. Without doubt, the highlight of Senior Prep is the three-night residential visit to an outdoor activity centre where the children enjoy a range of challenging activities – including canoeing, rock climbing, abseiling and gorge walking.
