Congratulations to Ian on being appointed as a Judge at the European General Court.

Speaking to GCR, Ian described the job as an exciting and important one.

“I am looking forward to being confronted by interesting questions of EU law and addressing these from a different perspective,” he said.

During his career in private practice, Ian was occasionally viewed by commentators as something of a crusader for reform of the European judiciary, but he dismissed such claims, reiterating that he often represented the European Commission before the courts.

“I have written extensively about European law and procedure and will look forward to considering these subjects from a different viewpoint,” he added.

Ian was a partner at White & Case in Brussels and a practising member of the bar in Brussels, England and Wales, Scotland and New York. Throughout his career, Ian has worked on some of Europe’s biggest competition cases, representing a number of household names including BBC, Canon, DuPont, GlaxoSmithKline, Toyota, Toshiba and Pfizer.
