Academic Junior

On 10 January the Junior 6 year group went to Glasgow University’s Psychology Department.  The purpose of the trip was to use the ‘children as researchers’ model to help the children start their own research projects.  By listening to academic researchers discuss their own research into such subjects as face recognition or the links between social media and changing sleep patterns in young people, the children were able to get an insight into how these experienced researchers went about their business.  The children then spent some time thinking about their own research question.  They came up with many interesting things to explore including:

  • Do girls or boys feel more pressure while multi-tasking?
  • Does homework help you learn?
  • What do people in my school think about Brexit?
  • Do children with one sibling fight more than children with more than one sibling?

The children will follow up the visit by working in class over the next few weeks to draft questionnaires, gather data, analyse data and present their findings.  We are looking forward to seeing how they get on in what is a very challenging process.

Here is a report from KA News which includes children presenting their work as well as talking about what they learned from the project.
